McHenry VFW has partnered with the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners program and Home Depot to create a peace garden project offers tranquility, relaxation, and peace for those in need of solitude, harmony, and healing. This therapeutic therapy is available for sufferers of post-traumatic stress.
Joe Menotti recognized the need for a community garden designed for those who have and are struggling with post-traumatic stress. After many meetings with the VFW and obtaining grants from the Home Depot, Joe, Lauri D. and their team planted 22 fruit trees, created multiple raised beds and started planting vegetable gardens and flower gardens to provide a safe and calming space.
The basic buildup of the peace garden was completed in the spring of 2021. The greenhouse project is underway and will accommodate bariatric wheelchairs and will have the minimum aspects of greenhouse operations.
Congratulations to the team whose hard work and dedication to this wonderful project led to winning this year's State-level award. Thank you - Joe M., Lauri D., Mary C., Jerry G., Ann H., Karen L., Laurie M., Helen N., Tyler O., Carol R., Maggie W. and MaryBeth Y.
When we package our produce to our community members, we like to include a couple recipe cards for them to try and enjoy. If your want to share a recipe, please click the button below.
